Example charging curve of a DC charging cable in Boost Mode for a higher charging power for a short period

Higher charging powers in Boost Mode How does it work and what needs to be considered?

As a manufacturer, we design our DC charging cables for continuous operation at a nominal current IN as defined by us at ambient temperatures of -30 to +40°C. In Boost Mode, some DC charging cables can carry significantly higher charging powers for a short period. For this purpose, we specify a maximum current Imax in the packing slip for the respective items.

The possible duration for operating a charging cable in Boost Mode depends on numerous operating conditions, such as the cooling capacity, ambient temperature, how frequently the charging point is used, and the design of the vehicle charging inlet. Also, charging cables can operate at a higher ambient temperature for a shorter period of time.

For manufacturers and operators of charging stations that make use of Boost Mode, it is imperative that the temperatures at the DC power contacts are continuously monitored using the integrated temperature sensors. When the limit temperature TMax. of +90°C is reached, the charging process must be aborted. If the system approaches the limit temperature, it is recommended that the charging current is reduced early, e.g., to the nominal current IN. In this case, we are talking about derating.

Our liquid-cooled HPC charging cables work with an environmentally and maintenance-friendly water-glycol mixture. They transmit up to 1 MW without compromising safety or manageability, making them an attractive option for utility vehicles too. The portfolio covers the following charging standards and performance classes:

  • NACS
    • Available from Q1 2026 / over 600 A permanently / 1,000 V
  • CCS type 1
    • 700 A in Boost Mode / 500 A permanently / 1,000 V
  • CCS type 2
    • 1,000 A in Boost Mode / 800 A permanently / 1,000 V

  • GB/T
    • 600 A in Boost Mode / 500 A permanently / 1,000 V

Our HPC charging cables are also available without liquid cooling. Instead, they use a higher conductor cross-section and can therefore transmit 500 kW, which is sufficient for many HPC applications. They are available for the following charging standards:

  • NACS
    • 500 A in Boost Mode / 375 A permanently / 1,000 V
  • CCS type 1
    • 500 A in Boost Mode / 375 A permanently / 1,000 V
  • CCS type 2

In order to meet all the requirements for billing in accordance with the German Measurement and Calibration Act, many of our DC charging cables and connectors are already prepared for four-wire measurement technology and are thus future-proof. The four-wire measurement technology allows the power dissipation in the charging cable to be recorded in order to precisely determine the energy transferred to the electric vehicle.

The clever sealing concepts of our DC charging cables ensure complete longitudinal water tightness, which completely protects the live parts inside the housing from moisture. This maximizes electrical safety while increasing the failsafe performance of the charging stations. Numerous tests in our accredited test-and-release laboratory ensure consistently high material and processing quality. This makes our charging connectors particularly robust, resilient, and durable – even under harsh outdoor conditions.

Service technician replacing the mating face of an HPC charging connector at a fast charging station

Despite being made of robust materials, charging connectors at semi-public or public charging stations require regular maintenance, also as a result of improper handling. The damage usually occurs on the mating face. Our repair kits, which are available separately, enable you to quickly and easily replace mating face frames and power contacts on the charging connector. There is no need to replace the entire charging cable. This is more sustainable, saves time and money, and increases the availability of your charging stations.

DC charging is also increasingly being used in the home, hospitality, and retail sectors, where it is common to leave vehicles parked for two to three hours. Low DC charging powers of up to around 100 kW are therefore usually sufficient. The compact CCS charging cables from the CHARX connect compact family are the ideal and economic solution here. The portfolio covers the following charging standards and performance classes:

  • CCS type 1
    • 40 A / 1,000 V
    • 80 A / 1,000 V
    • 125 A / 1,000 V
  • CCS type 2

The compact CCS charging cables won the Good Design Award 2021. The design of the charging connectors was developed together with graduate designer Stephan Gahlow from Hamburg and impressed the jury with its contemporary style. The ergonomic shape of the gripping zone also ensures easy handling and a comfortable feel.

CCS charging cables for vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home applications

Due to bidirectional converter technology, the DC home chargers of the near future will be able to perform vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home power feed-in. Here, the electricity can flow under control from the vehicle battery via the charging station into the power grid or the user’s own home. For these V2G and V2H applications, our compact CCS charging cables are the ideal solution.
