Detecting transient overvoltages and deriving measures

Railway infrastructure systems are typically extensively branched and encompass more and more centrally and decentrally installed electronic operating equipment. Although this typically includes surge protection, it is often difficult to detect the cause of damage and its effect due to wide distribution and galvanic connection. Consequently, it is only possible to implement systematic measures for maintenance and repair in some cases.

Phoenix Contact has developed a system that makes it possible to measure surge currents accurately and detect transient overvoltages, allowing a relationship between cause and effect to be established. Deriving and implementing the measures required is supported by interpreting the collected data. To plan predictive maintenance assignments and avoid system downtime even more effectively, the remaining life expectancy (state of health) of the installed lightning current arresters can be determined.
