The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) Charging powers of up to 4.5 MW for heavy utility vehicles

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is set to become an internationally standardized fast charging system for heavy utility vehicles, enabling charging powers of up to 4.5 MW at a maximum of 3,000 A and 1,500 V.

Since the CharIN MCS task force was created in 2018, Phoenix Contact has been working on defining requirements for the development of the MCS charging standard. Since 2020, we have also been actively promoting the global standardization of the MCS connector in IEC TS 63379 by leading the international project team of the IEC and the German mirror committee in the DKE (the German Commission for Electrotechnical, Electronic, and Information Technologies).

From Q4 2026, we expect to offer the first MCS charging cables for charging powers of up to 2.25 MW (1,500 A at 1,500 V rated voltage) with the high quality usually associated with Phoenix Contact – reliable, powerful, and easy to maintain. Key player in global standardization Together with IEC, DKE, and CharIN, we are accelerating the mobility transition

We are driving the electrification of the transportation sector – not only as a manufacturer of charging technology, but also as a trusted key player and active contributor to global standardization efforts.

As a leader of international project teams at the IEC and the German mirror committees within the DKE, we connect industry, testing institutes, and infrastructure partners, actively help shape the specifications for new charging standards, and accelerate the path to international standardization.

Alongside leading automobile manufacturers and the TÜV SÜD certification body, we were one of the founding members of the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) in 2015. Today, with more than 300 members, CharIN is the world’s leading association advocating for unified charging standards such as CCS, NACS, and MCS.

Through our global sales subsidiaries, we secure acceptance within national standardization organizations, establish our results on a global scale, and build trust in safe, interoperable charging.
