NACS is coming – and we’re prepared The first NACS charging cables will be available in Q4/2024

The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is gaining momentum and will replace the CCS type 1 charging standard in the long term. NACS will therefore play a central role in the electrification of the transport sector and the ramp-up of charging infrastructure in North America.

As a specialist in e-mobility charging technology, we of course want to satisfy the changing requirements of our customers and therefore offer SAE-compliant and UL-certified NACS charging cables that meet the highest demands.

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) Charging powers of up to 3.75 MW for heavy utility vehicles

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is set to become an internationally standardized fast charging system for heavy utility vehicles and enable charging powers of up to 3.75 MW. Since the CharIN MCS task force was created in 2018, we have been working on establishing requirements and standards for the development of the MCS.

In the medium term, we aim to introduce MCS charging cables and MCS vehicle charging inlets featuring Phoenix Contact’s customary superior quality.

Our AC charging cables have received three prestigious design awards: the German Design Award, the iF Design Award, and the Good Design Award. During product development, together with graduate designer Stephan Gahlow from Hamburg, the focus was on an ergonomic and attractive design, a modern and aesthetic use of form, and robust and high-quality materials. With these outstanding product characteristics, the charging cables made a lasting impression on the independent juries of international experts.

We were named Innovator of the Year 2019 for our groundbreaking High Power Charging Technology. Honorary Laureate Dr. Wladimir Klitschko presented the DDW (Die Deutsche Wirtschaft) Business Award to our CEO Michael Heinemann, our Project Manager Robert Ewendt, and our Developer Dirk Moseke. CharIN: Alongside leading automobile manufacturers and the TÜV Süd certification body, we have been one of the founding members of the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) since 2015. With more than 320 members, the organization promotes uniform charging standards such as the Combined Charging System (CCS), the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS).

BEM: We have been a partner of the German Federal Association for eMobility (Bundesverband eMobilität (BEM)) since 2021. With more than 450 members, the BEM works to promote e-mobility in Germany with the use of renewable energies and to strengthen the market environment by improving the legal framework and supporting the switch to emission-free drives.

With our CHARX control modular charging controllers, electric car batteries can be charged intelligently. Moreover, they are also able to return electricity to the grid. This way vehicle fleets become profitable energy storage facilities. The technology behind this is called vehicle-to-grid. CHARX control modular already meets standard ISO 15118 and is thus ready for vehicle-to-grid.

2009 – The beginning: Development of the first customer-specific connector that offers combined signal and power transmission for charging electric vehicles.
AC charging sockets
2010 – First series production: AC charging sockets for Chinese charging column manufacturers are produced and supplied in large quantities.
CCS standardization
2010 – Start of CCS standardization: Working together with leading automobile manufacturers, we develop and standardize a global charging standard for combined AC and DC charging (later becoming the Combined Charging System, CCS).
E-bus
2011 – Charging connection system for e-buses: We develop a connector that makes it possible to exchange large batteries for electric buses. The discharged batteries are automatically replaced with fully charged batteries in the depot, thus optimizing the utilization of the buses.

2012 – First charging cables and controllers: Charging station manufacturers are supplied with the AC charging cables and controllers as well as prototypes of the combined charging cable (later becoming the Combined Charging System, CCS) in accordance with the preliminary standard for the first time.

2013 – Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH founded: The new subsidiary in Schieder-Schwalenberg bundles all of the Phoenix Contact Group’s e-mobility expertise under the management of Helmut Friedrich.

2014 – Fast charging in accordance with the CCS standard: The IEC 62196-3 standard, which describes fast DC charging with CCS, is adopted. Series production of vehicle charging inlets and charging cables that comply with the standard begins.
