Charging with alternating current in accordance with mode 3 When do I need which charging cable?

  • Mobile charging cables are used in charging case B (top in the figure). They are stored in the trunk of the vehicle, for example. The cable is equipped with a connecting element at both ends.
  • Mobile adapter charging cables are the ideal solution for charging case B, for example if a vehicle with an American type 1 charging inlet needs to be charged at a European type 2 charging station.
  • You need a charging cable with a free cable end for charging case C (bottom in figure). For this purpose, the charging cable is permanently connected to the charging station or home charger.

Our charging cables with a free cable end are ideal for mounting on AC wall boxes for private use, e.g. in a carport or garage. These charging cables only have a charging connector on the vehicle side. This makes handling much easier electric car drivers. They only have to plug the charging cable into the vehicle, unlike for home chargers with a charging socket, where they also have to connect the cable to the home charger.

Electric car charges at public charging station via a mobile mode 3 charging cable

Most public charging stations are equipped with a charging socket instead of a permanently attached charging cable, as this is less susceptible to vandalism and requires less frequent maintenance. To connect and charge a vehicle here, our mobile mode 3 charging cables are the ideal solution. They feature both a vehicle charging connector and an infrastructure charging plug.

The design of the charging connector features a contemporary style and is also functionally well-developed. The ergonomic shape of the gripping zone ensures easy handling and a comfortable feel.

AC charging connector in outdoor use in the rain

The intelligent sealing concept prevents moisture from penetrating into the charging connector or the cable. High-quality materials ensure the necessary robustness. Therefore, there is nothing preventing constant outdoor use.

Phoenix Contact employee accepts design award for AC charging cables

Our AC charging cables have already received three prestigious design awards: the German Design Award, the iF Design Award, and the Good Design Award. During product development, together with graduate designer Stephan Gahlow from Hamburg, the focus was on an ergonomic and attractive design, a modern and aesthetic use of form, and robust and high-quality materials. The charging cables clearly won over the international experts on the independent juries with these outstanding product characteristics.

For a consistent appearance of your brand, we also manufacture our AC charging connectors with your logo on request. You have the choice between imprinting your logo and having a UV- and weather-resistant plastic label. For the charging cable, you can choose between various lengths and cross-sections, metric or AWG cables, and spiraled or straight cables. If you cannot find your preferred combination within our range, then we can also manufacture a customer-specific product for you. We can also supply the cable end with a step cut, pre-assembled or compacted, upon request.
