TSN – the new Ethernet technology

Time-Sensitive Networking is a set of standards designed to improve the real-time properties of current Ethernet networks. This is therefore made of several individual standards that are currently being defined in the TSN Task Group of the IEEE 802.1 standardization organization.

However, Ethernet TSN is not an independent communication protocol. Instead, it defines functions. These functions can in turn be used by different protocols such as OPC UA and PROFINET.

User-friendly TSN configuration

Easy PROFINET TSN configuration via PROFINET 2.4 engineering

PROFINET TSN profile

The 2300 and 5900 series managed TSN switches support the PROFINET TSN profile:

  • IEEE 802.1AS (precise time synchronization)
  • Frame preemption
  • Stream management via PROFINET

This makes for very easy TSN configuration. The FL SWITCH TSN 2300 and 5900 devices enable user-friendly TSN configuration via PROFINET 2.4 engineering. Here, the configuration of isochronous data traffic is easier than with classic PROFINET RT.

CC-Link IE TSN profile

The FL SWITCH TSN 2300 and 5900 managed switches also support the CC-Link IE TSN profile. The CC-Link IE TSN specification combines Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth with the TSN feature set:

  • Time and cycle synchronization
  • Scheduling/traffic shaping
  • Timesharing

The TSN mechanisms increase the performance, robustness, and availability of current networks.

TSN switches for implementing TSN without replacing devices

Proven and future-proof in one device

Supporting all the functions of the FL SWITCH 2000 series, the FL SWITCH TSN 2300 and FL SWITCH 5900 devices can also be used in classic applications. Use the TSN switches from Phoenix Contact to migrate your current network solution to modern TSN architectures.
