Transneft operates national oil pipelines

Transneft is a Russian state-controlled company based in Moscow which operates the national oil pipelines.

The company was founded in 1993 and currently has the world's largest pipeline system with a total length of almost 50,000 km.


One of the pipeline systems that Transneft operates is the ESPO (Eastern Siberia Pacific Ocean) pipeline. It is 2757 km long and supplies 15 million tons of oil per year to Daqing in China.

There are future plans to expand capacity to 30 million tons and to transport oil over a total length of 4700 km as far as Japan and South Korea in the Pacific region. A total of 32 pumping stations and 13 tank farms will be required for this.

Transneft uses intrinsically safe signal converters from Phoenix Contact to transmit process data from the field to the station control rooms.

The universal temperature transducers convert temperature signals from resistance thermometers and thermocouples into 4 ... 20 mA signals. They are supplied with power by Ex-i repeater power supplies.

The input isolating amplifier then transmits the analog signals to the control rooms in the safe area. Thanks to innovative circuit technology, the Ex isolators which are just 12.4 mm wide feature precise signal processing (linearity deviation < 0.1%) and low power dissipation (maximum repeater power supply: 1.3 W).

The inputs, outputs, and power supply units are electrically isolated from one another. All the isolators used transmit the HART protocol bidirectionally. The isolators are approved according to ATEX as associated intrinsically safe operating equipment for zone 0.

With our concept, Ex isolation can be combined with input terminal blocks. This means that an entire DIN rail with modular terminal blocks can be eliminated: not only significantly reducing the amount of space required, but also possible error sources.

The integrated disconnect knives and test sockets enable problem-free disconnection of Ex-i cables. This simplifies startup considerably. The plug-in design of the Ex-i modules also means that subsequent functional adaptations can be implemented easily.

In addition to Ex-i modules, Transneft uses other components from Phoenix Contact, such as power supply units, pre-assembled system cables, and PLC relays.


Process Interface PI provides Transneft with an innovative solution for intrinsically safe circuits with plug-in electronics modules and a basic terminal block.

The advantage: the electronics module houses the functions and not the basic terminal block. The low design width meant an additional space saving of 30%.
