Coupling various sectors and stakeholders, such as power grids, buildings, local generators, charging stations, and electric vehicles, is the key to sustainable and integrated e-mobility that is based on renewable energies. This includes, for example, the integration of vehicles into the smart grid or smart home, efficient and user-friendly business processes, and device and patch management for charging park operators. All these services require secure communication based on various protocols. With the new generation of controllers in the form of CHARX control modular, the open Linux platform for implementing customer software, and Phoenix Contact’s years of application expertise, you are ideally prepared for these challenges.

CHARX control modular control modules

Take a look at how versatile and flexible using CHARX control modular for various applications can be: Simply combine the alignable control modules as required. This way you can tailor the system precisely to your application – from a single home charger to a parking garage. The plug-and-play-capable modules are supplied with power via the DIN rail bus connector and are automatically detected in the local network. This significantly reduces the wiring and configuration effort.

Charging park management in the control center of a charging point operator (CPO)

By supporting all common communication protocols such as ISO 15118, OCPP, Modbus/TCP, MQTT, and REST, your charging points communicate in a smart and secure way with connected vehicles as well as with backend, building, and grid control systems. Convenient and dynamic load management for your charging park can be implemented in a variety of ways, e.g., through current value definition via Modbus/TCP. With the help of a WLAN USB adapter, you can use the charging controller as a WLAN client or WLAN access point, which enables the wireless use of existing interfaces and simplifies commissioning. You can configure the controller modules and control your charging park conveniently in your web browser via web-based management (WBM). Remote access and remote maintenance are also possible via OpenVPN and an MQTT bridge.

Charging process at a charging station being billed

CHARX control modular meets all requirements for charging that is compliant with calibration laws. The new calibration law concept also considerably simplifies the implementation and certification of your calibration law solution: The charging controller serves as an interface between the signing energy meter (measuring capsule) and the OCPP backend. It forwards the data relevant to calibration law in OCMF format (Open Charge Metering Format), but does not process it. This eliminates the need for complex software tests on the controller, which significantly shortens the certification process. Updates to the controller software do not jeopardize the validity of the calibration law certificate, which saves you the trouble of recertification. In addition, our solution is not tied to a specific energy meter model – this allows you to design your charging solution flexibly. The OCMF-capable MID energy meters Iskra WM3M4C, Bauer BSM-WS36A, and EMH iML e-moc are currently supported. Other models can be added on request.

Charging station surrounded by a protective shield

New EU regulations and directives are placing increasing requirements on the IT security of charging infrastructure: The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) in accordance with EN 18031 is mandatory as of August 2025. It calls for the protection of charging points with wireless connections such as RFID, WLAN, or cellular communication against unauthorized access. This affects smart and app-controlled home chargers, for example. The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will supplement this with comprehensive security requirements for networked devices from December 2027. Charging points are therefore considered digital products. The manufacturers of these must ensure security updates, vulnerability management, and CE marking. But don’t worry, we keep your charging controller compliant and secure with regular and free security updates to minimize the risk of cyberattacks and tampering. You build your charging station – we make sure it operates securely.

Electric cars and charging stations in a parking garage

When you choose an AC charging controller from Phoenix Contact, you can rest assured that the hardware platform is of high quality, durable, and already designed for the applications of the future, including support for vehicle communication in accordance with ISO 15118. The controller software, on the other hand, is continuously being refined and adapted to changing market requirements. Functions such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H), plug-and-charge (PnC), and OCPP 2.0.1 are retrofitted via free software updates.

Successfully completed projects Examples of customers who are successfully using CHARX control modular

RZB ENERGY charging technology
Bavarian company RZB ENERGY based in Bamberg, Germany, combines lighting solutions with modern charging technology. The modular products consist of a standpipe, charging container, and luminaire head or cover plate. Several charging stations are often used in combination. A client-server network compliant with calibration laws and boasting up to twelve charging points saves costs. AC charging controllers and AC charging sockets from Phoenix Contact are used.
Charging infrastructure solution from PLUON
The charging infrastructure solution from PLUON is a customizable system for sustainable mobility – individually designed as well as ecologically and locally produced. The patented modular system enables a long service life due to replaceable components. Equipped with AC charging controllers, energy meters, RFID readers, and other components from Phoenix Contact, PLUON combines technology, design, and sustainability.
Largest PV charging park in northern Germany from Pramux and ferry operator Frisia
The largest PV charging park in northern Germany, built by Pramux and operated by ferry operator Frisia, charges the electric vehicles of vacationers while they are visiting the North Sea islands. Phoenix Contact uses intelligent charging management to ensure that the vehicles are recharged with sustainably generated PV electricity by the time they return. The AC charging controllers communicate with the charging park’s higher-level control system, the billing system, and, of course, the vehicles.
e-RS e-mobility charging solutions
e-RS is a Belgian provider of complete e-mobility charging solutions. The company’s aim is to offer an integrated, centrally controlled solution for charging parks. In the project shown here, 120 charging points were installed, which can be expanded to up to 800 charging points. Central control cabinets with AC charging controllers, switching devices, and energy meters from Phoenix Contact are used, enabling efficient control and monitoring.

Scalable for every application From a single home charger to a parking garage with 48 charging points

Example integration of a CHARX control modular class 1000 charging controller in a single home charger without communication connection
Example 1: Carport with a single home charger without communication connection. The class 1000 controller already has all the necessary functions for single charging points, such as residual current detection or charging connector release in the event of a power failure. Access rights can be granted by adding users to an RFID whitelist.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3150 charging controller in a single charging point with wireless backend connection in a smart city
Example 2: Single charging point with wireless backend connection in a smart city. The class 3150 controller enables the wireless connection of charging points to billing systems via the integrated 4G modem and the OCPP protocol. Due to the compact design, charging stations can be integrated into streetlamps, for example.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3100 and class 1000 charging controllers into three double charging points with backend connection and terminal on a company parking lot
Example 3: Company parking lot with three double charging points and terminal with backend connection. A double charging station consisting of a class 3100 controller and a class 1000 controller manages two lower-level double charging points, each comprising a class 3000 controller and a class 1000 controller. The touch terminal and backend system are connected via the class 3100 controller.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3000 and class 1000 charging controllers in a parking garage with 48 charging points and a central control cabinet with backend connection
Example 4: Parking garage with 48 charging points and a central control cabinet with backend connection. One class 3000 controller and 11 class 1000 controllers are connected via DIN rail bus connector to form a cluster of 12 charging points. The class 3000 controller is used to manage three additional clusters of the same structure, meaning a total of 48 charging points.
