DC connectors for protection against electric arcs in DC applications

What is special about the ArcZero DC connectors from Phoenix Contact?

DC applications are becoming increasingly more established in the markets, since they offer many advantages like reduced conversion losses. Nevertheless, up to now, disconnecting under load has produced a dangerous electric arc. Not so, however, with the DC connectors of the ArcZero series from Phoenix Contact. These reliably protect you against electric arcs and thus enable safe connection and disconnection under load.

This allows you to safely shut down selected parts of the system when you need to replace parts or service a device, while the rest of the system remains in operation. This means high availability – with downtimes being a thing of the past.

Safe connection and disconnection under load become possible for the first time. The special feature is integrated in the DC connector. An innovative piece of electronics, directly built into the connector, actively quenches the electric arc. This solution protects the operator during the maintenance of operating systems.

The connector is resistant to impacts of class IK08 at temperatures down to -25°C. The impact force is similar to the impact of a medium-sized hammer dropping from a height of approximately 1 m onto the connector.

Yes, mechanical loads, e.g., due to cables, need to be supported up to 50 cm behind the connector through cable ties. The bending radius of the cable must also be observed.

The cable must always meet the requirements of your application. Therefore, check the cable data sheet to determine whether the cable manufacturer has approved the cable for the desired application. When selecting cables, pay special attention to the DC voltage level and whether it is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Using the ArcZero connector, end and distribution circuits up to 20 A and 400 V or 800 V can be connected. To be able to safely disconnect 400 V or 800 V under load, large clearances between the potentials are required inside the connector. The clearances prevent the operators from suffering an electric shock.
