Foresight instead of hindsight: Phoenix Contact brings machine learning forecasts into energy management

Phoenix Contact is extending its Energy Management Service to include a powerful forecasting function. With the help of machine learning, companies can estimate their future energy consumption, create transparency, and identify potential excess consumption at an early stage – the next step toward predictive energy management in accordance with ISO 50001.

At SPS 2025, the technology company Phoenix Contact will be presenting a groundbreaking addition to its established Energy Management Service product: a new forecasting function that enables precise energy consumption forecasts based on machine learning algorithms – directly integrated into the existing energy management software. The Energy Management Service is a cloud-based solution for manufacturing companies that want to systematically monitor, analyze, and improve their energy efficiency – in line with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 50001. The software already includes essential functions such as:

  • Dashboards for monitoring energy consumption in near real time
  • Context-sensitive consumption analyses (e.g., depending on production volume)
  • EnPI (Energy Performance Indicators) reporting for audits and internal documentation
  • Export functions and interfaces for reporting and communication
  • Built-in alarm systems that signal when limit values are violated

This new forecast function is available with immediate effect. It can be activated via a user-friendly toggle button and provides users with a visual preview of their future energy consumption, which can be displayed in various diagram types. The basis of this function is trained ML models that provide precise forecasts taking into account historical consumption data, production volumes, and seasonal fluctuations. The confidence interval is freely adjustable. Users are issued with transparent feedback on the quality of the forecast and can make well-founded decisions based on this. This allows any potential excess consumption to be detected at an early stage, cost trends to be estimated, and control measures to be introduced in advance.

The new function has been specially developed for users who want to certify (or recertify) their energy management process in accordance with ISO 50001 and who rely on transparency, efficiency, and data quality. The forecast function provides significant added value, particularly in the context of the ISO 50001-compliant evaluation of energy efficiency. The extension is now a component part of the Energy Management Service and will be made available to all existing customers as an update. Live demonstrations will be held at the Phoenix Contact stand in Hall 9, Booth 310.
