NACS is coming and Phoenix Contact is ready: AC charging cables for 50 A and 80 A available from the end of 2024
As a specialist in e-mobility charging technology, Phoenix Contact will be offering the first SAE-compliant and UL-certified NACS charging cables for AC currents up to 80 A at the end of the year.
The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is playing a central role in the electrification of the transport sector and the ramp-up of charging infrastructure in North America. The NACS AC charging cables in the CHARX connect eco family comply with the SAE J3400 North American automotive standard. The automotive standard was adopted at the end of 2023 and is based on the design of the proprietary Tesla charging connector.
Certified in accordance with UL 2251, the NACS charging cables from Phoenix Contact have passed all safety-related UL tests. For electrical safety, the power contacts of the NACS charging connector are equipped with touch protection that meets IP2XB degree of protection in accordance with UL requirements. Fully molded plastic caps on the protruding pins of the power contacts ensure that touch protection remains permanently in place. This prevents electrical accidents caused by inadvertently touching the power contacts and also increases the failsafe performance of NACS charging stations. The optionally integrated temperature sensor technology for protection against overheating contributes to the high availability of the NACS charging infrastructure. In addition, the complete longitudinal water tightness of the charging connector protects the live parts.
The AC charging connectors are tailored to the mounting requirements of NACS charging stations. They are either available with a 25 ft long unassembled cable or can be assembled according to the customer’s wishes upon request. From the flexible stripping length and step cut to crimping or compacting using ultrasonic welding technology – with the CHARX connect eco NACS charging cables, Phoenix Contact enables the rapid setup of standard-compliant and safe AC charging infrastructure in North America.
