Solutions for Hazardous Locations

Device selection in accordance with CSA (CEC), UL (NEC), ATEX & IECEx : Explosive atmospheres can occur in almost all industrial applications. To safely prevent explosions, electrical devices in potentially explosive areas are subject to special requirements, directives, and standards. In this page, you will find appropriate device selection for the North American applications.

CID2 CUL Certified Products

Solutions for hazardous location applications

CID2 stands for Class I, Division 2. This classification is part of the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1) and the US National Electrical Code (NEC 500) and is used to designate hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are present, but not under normal operating conditions. Instead, these substances are confined within closed systems and are only likely to escape in case of accidental rupture or breakdown.

The other lesser-used designation of Zone (rather than Division) under CSA and UL guidance is approved for reciprocal use. Phoenix Contact is the market leader for CID2-approved products in the industrial market.

Surge Protectors

From feed-in to the end device, we offer you the right surge protection for a multi-level protection concept. Depending on the installation location and requirements, surge protective devices are normatively divided into different types: type 1, type 2, and type 3. This type classification is based on various tests. If more than one test is passed, they are referred to as combined lightning current and surge arresters.

Intrinsically Safe Barriers

An IS Barrier is designed for Ex (hazardous) areas to ensure safe signal transmission between field devices and control systems. These barriers limit energy (voltage and current) to prevent ignition in explosive atmospheres, making them essential for applications in oil & gas, chemical, and other process industries. In addition to explosion protection, they offer galvanic isolation, signal conversion, and filtering—ensuring accurate data, system integrity, and compliance with international safety standards like ATEX, IECEx, and Class 1 Div 2 (NEC/CEC).

Signal Conditioners

A signal conditioner is a device used to convert, isolate, amplify, or filter electrical signals between field devices and control systems. These conditioners ensure accurate, interference-free signal transmission by providing galvanic isolation, protecting sensitive equipment, and adapting signal levels to match PLC or DCS input requirements. They are essential for maintaining measurement precision, system safety, and process reliability in demanding industrial environments.
