Hallberg-Rassy Varf AB in Ellös, Sweden, constructs luxury sailing yachts, such as the cruiser HR 64 which is just under 20 meters long. Together with the owner of the Sunny Times, Mr. Günther Cramer, Phoenix Contact developed a surge protection concept and installed this on the sailing yacht.
The implementation of the protection concept includes the areas of external and internal lightning protection as well as also cathode corrosion protection. As all metal cables have to be grounded via the keel, the sensitive devices for navigation, communication, control, and the drive must also be protected against surge currents with appropriate surge protective devices.
Even in the event of surge voltage couplings to the shore power, appropriate protective devices should be used. The cathode corrosion protection makes use of sacrificial anodes, which protect the drive shaft and other metal components against wear.
