Phoenix Contact receives new IEC 62443 certificates at the Hannover Messe
Phoenix Contact received two new IEC 62443 certifications from TÜV Rheinland at Hannover Messe 2025.
The mGuard security routers have been certified in accordance with IEC 62443-4-2. With this certification, TÜV Rheinland confirms that the security routers meet the high security standards for production facilities. The series consistently achieves Security Level Capability SL-C 2. Regular firmware updates and various software maintenance measures ensure that this high level of security is maintained in the long term.
In addition, the product development process has once again been recertified by TÜV Rheinland in accordance with IEC 62443-4-1. Phoenix Contact has received certificates up to Maturity Level 3 for a total of seven Business Units. The Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) was also certified. The PSIRT identifies and analyzes security vulnerabilities, coordinates the collaboration of internal product experts, and publishes security advisories on confirmed vulnerabilities. This certification confirms the company’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to security incidents and to protect its automation systems in the best possible way.
For customers, the certifications mean that systems that are currently being planned will continue to meet the required security standards even after the new cybersecurity laws, such as NIS2, the Machinery Regulation, and the CRA, come into force. Machine builders and system manufacturers have the necessary planning security to meet the increasing security requirements in the future. Dr. Martin Wetter, Executive Vice President Innovation at Phoenix Contact: “The IEC 62443 certifications are of central importance to us in order to ensure conformance with legal requirements and product compliance. Innovation and cybersecurity are closely linked at Phoenix Contact to ensure we always provide our customers with secure solutions.“
Phoenix Contact laid the foundation for its cybersecurity measures back in 2018 with the first TÜV certification in accordance with IEC 62443-4-1. In 2021, PLCnext Control became the first controller on the market to be certified in accordance with IEC 62443-4-2 SL2. Since then, the company has continuously applied the secure-by-design development processes for numerous products such as controllers, firewalls, switches, routers, and power supplies. The number of Phoenix Contact products certified in accordance with IEC 62443-4-2 now runs into double figures, with yet more already in the process of certification.
The numerous certifications underscore the company’s ongoing commitment to high security standards in the industry. They are a key component of the company’s 360° security concept, which aims to ensure the security of products and systems throughout their entire lifecycle. This is also confirmed by Ulrich Leidecker, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Phoenix Contact: “The IEC 62443 certifications are an essential part of our digitalization strategy. Cybersecurity is particularly important for Phoenix Contact, especially in the automation industry, where the security of systems and data is paramount.”
