Device and Update Management (DaUM)

With the Phoenix Contact Device and Update Management service based on OPC UA, it is possible to manage and update automation devices regardless of their manufacturer. The software, which was previously available as a Windows service, is now also available as a Docker container for use in Linux systems.

In the industrial environment, Device and Update Management solutions often use a vendor-specific process to distribute files to proprietary devices and install them based on the manufacturer. With the DaUM service based on OPC UA, automation devices can be managed and updated regardless of the manufacturer. These devices include controllers, I/O modules, frequency converters, robots, network devices, power supplies, and other components used in automation technology. The Device and Update Management service uses the OPC UA 10000-100 standard for this.

It is not just this ability to update many different components within the automation system that is new, but also the fact that security is ensured consistently at all levels of the system. Any communication tasks or commands are only performed if they have been authenticated and authorized, with strict reference to IEC 62443.

Another feature is the option of being able to operate the DaUM service on various levels. Depending on the application and system size, the DaUM service runs on a central Windows instance or now also on the user’s Linux systems.

The Device and Update Management software is available via “docker pull phoenixcontact/daum:25.0.0”.
