Reducing energy consumption in a Dutch tunnel

Subsidiary meets government targets to reduce energy consumption.

Project goal

The Dutch subsidiary became involved as a product and solution expert for infrastructure, aiming at reducing energy consumption in the Leidsche-Rijn Tunnel. A tailored concept for reducing consumption was developed and implemented together with the customer Schreder. This contribution to a sustainable world is the result of an official requirement from the Dutch government (Rijkswaterstaat) to reduce energy consumption.

The Leidsche-Rijn Tunnel, the Netherlands

Consistent solution reduces energy consumption

When it comes to energy consumption, tunnel lighting is one of the biggest consumers. The old tunnel lighting in the Leidsche-Rijn Tunnel in the Netherlands, including the automation system, has been completely replaced. Phoenix Contact developed a plug-and-play solution for this with PLCnext controllers and pre-programmed software. An intelligent gate controller (Lumgate) was implemented to control the LED drivers. In addition, a special interface was built to connect to the existing main control system and a graphical user interface (GUI) was implemented. More than 250 driver control cabinets were built specifically for this project.

This example clearly shows how Phoenix Contact serves customer needs with products and solutions in an innovative and tailored way, while at the same time contributing to the sustainable development of our society. The service life of the lighting system in the tunnel is at least 15 years.

Promotion of sustainable infrastructure

I am very proud that Phoenix Contact is making a contribution to reducing carbon emissions and thus to a cleaner planet. At the same time, we are contributing to greater safety for tunnel users and improving the flow of traffic.
