Smart City Concepts and solutions for the intelligent cities of tomorrow

Climate change, advancing digitalization, and a severe shortage of natural resources are presenting cities and regions with new challenges. With highly integrated and networked information and communication technology, Phoenix Contact is contributing to the structured transformation of urban spaces into Smart Cities.

Rely on our application and technology expertise and we will realize concepts for an intelligent infrastructure together. This approach will also keep your city attractive for residents and businesses in the long term.

On the way to more livable cities Use all resources and energy efficiently

The digital transformation to smart cities paves the way for a sustainable and safe city of tomorrow – in line with the future vision of the All Electric Society. Smart city applications play a crucial role as a networking link between society and digitalization.

But habitats will only become truly smart through consistent networking and the utilization of all available data sources. Our smart services, using this data as the basis and using our IoT devices, provide you with the data transparency you need. Join us in realizing cost-effective and resource-efficient smart city projects.

In addition to a broad component portfolio, the Smart City Box is our universally applicable element for digitalization. As a hub, the preconfigured control cabinet enables the implementation of smart applications for urban infrastructure.

A PLCnext Control, the hardware for the PLCnext Technology ecosystem, is at the heart of the Smart City Box. Our open LoRaWAN gateway is used for building or extending a LoRaWAN network. Modules with AI functionality are integrated for deep learning applications.

We respond to individual requirements with high project flexibility. Rely on our expertise and save IT resources.

We provide consulting and training for state-of-the-art wireless technology such as LoRaWAN. In addition, our comprehensive service portfolio includes commissioning, engineering, and integrating software and hardware (including sensor technology) into IoT environments.

Manage all sensors and data centrally on our IoT platform. With grovez.io, Phoenix Contact is providing a secure cloud environment in which Smart City services can be operated.

Using the IoT platform is easy with the intuitive web interface and dashboards. There is also no need for in-house IT resources because we are responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of the IoT platform.

To also realize your own individual Smart City application, alongside existing communication interfaces like MQTT and LoRaWAN server, for example, Grovez.io can be easily extended to include other communication technologies.

Screens with software services

Phoenix Contact provides you with both standardized and customized software-as-a-service solutions. Devices can be intelligently managed via their own web service access and data from the Smart City application can be visualized as required.

With the open system architecture, you can use the software services on our IoT platform or we can work together to integrate our application-specific software into your existing infrastructure.

Collaborations and research projects AI-based applications for the smart future of cities

In order to bring progress and benefits to the lives of people and the community, many new, forward-looking applications are currently being developed. In cooperation with Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, Phoenix Contact is developing solutions with AI functionality to fundamentally improve life.

One example of a deep learning application is counting vehicles using optical sensor technology. The image data is processed by a PLCnext Control device, the hardware for the PLCnext Technology ecosystem, and transmitted anonymously to the cloud. This will enable the flow of traffic in the city to be optimized in the long term.

Smart buildings are an integral part of Smart Cities. If they are intelligently networked and integrated into the overall concept, the buildings can contribute to the efficient, stable, and economic city concept, e.g., as a storage system or consumer in the field of power supply.

Our IoT-based Emalytics building management system combines the central elements for the digitalization of a building in one intelligent platform. This enables the location-independent control and monitoring of various properties.

A livable city requires good air quality and a tailored approach to mobility. A transportation system that is tailored to the Smart City is an important basis for living and working in the city. The aim is to protect the environment, for example by reducing emissions, conserving resources, and simultaneously increasing safety for all road and transport users.

You can capture current data with our systems and solutions, and adapt to the changing needs of the city with the aid of intelligent automation systems.
This new level of transparency, in combination with active traffic control or intelligent street lighting, represents an important building block on the journey toward safe and sustainable mobility.

Making a smart world a reality also involves the intelligent use of our most valuable resource: Water. It is not just water that flows in modern plants; there is also a stream of large volumes of data.

Our solutions for smart water utilize information and help improve water supply, disposal, and usage. By linking and evaluating a wide range of data, complex and critical infrastructures can be monitored and controlled in real time, efficiently, and reliably. As an aid to process optimization, external information is also incorporated using IoT applications. Open and flexible systems provide planning certainty for suppliers and conserve resources.
