Application examples Energy monitoring and increased efficiency in production

Energy monitoring devices are installed in the production facilities of a company to acquire data on energy consumption. The Proficloud.io IIoT platform, which offers the smart Energy Management Service for comprehensive data analysis, is used here.
The following three applications, for example, are possible with the Energy Management Service.

Energy consumption of machines and systems on screens

Compare energy consumption of machines and systems

By continuously monitoring energy consumption, the consumption of individual machines and systems can be analyzed and the data between machines can be compared. This makes it possible to identify potential savings and to optimize energy use.

Production hall with bottles on a conveyor belt

Calculating costs per part

The Energy Management Service enables a company to determine the costs associated with each part produced. By linking energy-consumption data to production records, it provides a precise insight into the output for each part that is produced.

Avoidance of peak loads by identifying machines with high consumption

By analyzing the energy consumption data, machines that consume excessive amounts of energy can be identified. This helps to avoid peak loads and to improve overall production efficiency.

Energy Management Service functions

Comparison of energy data
The Smart Service offers the option of comparing energy data from different devices and time periods. This enables customers to recognize which devices or times consume the most energy.

Cost calculation
Customers can calculate and monitor their direct costs for energy consumption, which highlights inefficiencies more clearly. This understanding enables planned measures to reduce energy consumption to be made, which will result in significant cost savings.

Remote monitoring
Customers can monitor their energy consumption at any time and from anywhere. This ensures greater flexibility and convenience.

Warning system
The integrated warning system notifies customers if their energy consumption exceeds a certain limit value. This avoids high costs for exceeding energy consumption.

External data sources
External data sources can be used for analysis in the Energy Management Service, allowing data from external sources (CSV file) to be included in the displays. This enables an immediate comparison of historical and current data when using Proficloud.io. In addition, “virtual devices” can be created in the Energy Management Service, which can be reused in future reports and dashboards.

EnPI reports
Simple reports with energy performance indicators (EnPI) are created to evaluate and track energy efficiency. By analyzing the EnPI data, areas of improvement can be identified, goals defined, and informed decisions made for optimizing energy consumption.

Visualization options

Energy bar chart – load after load
Energy bar chart – period over period
Energy pie chart – load after load
Energy pie chart – period after period
Energy bar chart – load after load

You can use this widget to compare the energy data of several loads next to each other over the same period of time. The data is displayed in a bar chart.

Energy bar chart – period over period

With this widget, you can overlay energy data from several time periods for the same load in a widget. The data is displayed in a bar chart.

Energy pie chart – load after load

This widget can be used to compare the energy data of several loads over the same period of time. The data is displayed with its absolute values and its relative share of the total consumption of the various loads on a pie chart.

Energy pie chart – period after period

This widget can be used to compare energy data from several time periods for the same load. The data is displayed with its absolute values and their relative share of the total amount of the different consumption periods of a consumer on a pie chart.

Energy Pareto chart – organized by loads
Energy Pareto diagram – organized by periods
Power line chart – load over load
Streamline diagram – organized according to time periods
Energy Pareto chart – organized by loads

This widget shows the energy data of multiple loads over a selected period of time. The information is displayed in a combination of bar charts and line charts. A bar represents the total value for the selected period of time per load. The bars are sorted from the highest (left) to the lowest (right) consumption. The widget also contains the accumulated percentage value as a line chart.

Energy Pareto diagram – organized by periods

This widget shows the energy data for several loads averaged over a selected period of time. The information is displayed in a combined bar chart and line chart. A bar shows the stacked sum of all selected loads for a specific period of time as per to the selected aggregation level, e.g., 15 minutes, hourly, daily, etc. The bars are arranged from the highest to the lowest energy consumption. The chart contains a cumulative curve.

Power line chart – load over load

This widget enables the comparison of the energy data from several loads. It displays the load profile of loads over a certain period of time. The data is displayed in a line chart.

Static values

  • Min.: The minimum of all data points for the selected date range per load with their time stamps
  • Max.: The maximum of all data points for the selected date range per load with their time stamps
  • Medium: The mean value of all data points for the selected date range per load
  • Standard deviation: The standard deviation of all data points for the selected date range per load
  • All time min.: The lowest value ever occurred per load in this current time series
  • All time max.: The highest value ever occurred in this current time series per load

Streamline diagram – organized according to time periods

This widget enables the comparison of the power data of different periods for the same load. It represents the load profile of the load for these different time periods. The data is displayed in a line chart.

Statistical values

  • Min.: The minimum of all displayed data points per date range with their time stamps
  • Max.: The maximum of all displayed data points per date range with their time stamps
  • Mean value: The mean value of all displayed data points per date range
  • Standard deviation: The standard deviation of all displayed data points per date range

Easy implementation of an energy management system

The hardware is connected to the Energy Management Service via EMpro energy measuring devices, IIoT-capable EMpro energy measuring devices, and PLCnext Technology. EMpro energy measuring devices acquire precise energy data and transmit it to Proficloud.io for practically real-time monitoring. PLCnext Technology enables the integration and control of various devices, including third-party devices, via an open architecture. This combination provides a flexible and efficient solution for energy management.

Topography of hardware for the Energy Management Service smart service

The first step on the Proficloud.io IIoT platform is to integrate the hardware into the free Device Management Service. This service is the Smart Service in which the hardware is integrated to make the data available for further Smart Services.

The Device Management Service also enables device management and monitoring by providing standardized, application-independent device information in near real time for Phoenix Contact and third-party devices. Users can monitor the health status of registered devices, perform firmware updates remotely, and use an interactive map to visualize the device status.

In addition, the DMS Basic Add-on offers extended functions for the device management service. This add-on allows users to perform application updates for specific PLCnext devices remotely, create device groups, and use a customizable card to freely place devices within a group, among other things. It also includes a notification system for status changes of individual devices, which can also send email notifications to individual recipients outside of Proficloud.io. The Basic Add-on also enables automatic, secure firmware updates for devices that can be natively integrated into Proficloud.io.
