With the Catan C1, Phoenix Contact is presenting a controller for building automation that combines open architecture, modular extendibility, and interoperability. As part of the product family of the same name, the Catan C1 has been designed for durability, maintainability, and reuse.

The Catan C1 utilizes an open platform logic that supports both established automation approaches and the latest software methods. The engineering, commissioning, and entire life cycle management processes benefit from flexible tools – from structured function blocks through to the integration of additional applications. This facilitates refurbishments in existing buildings and reduces the complexity of projects.
The hardware itself is modular in design and can be scaled from compact individual rooms right up to multi-trade applications. Supplementary display and extension modules help with operation, diagnostics, and the extension of the I/O level. The device design follows industrial quality standards and is optimized for the control cabinet, including robust housing materials, tool-free mounting options, and a clear structuring of the power supply, communication, and I/O systems.

The controller is based on the PLCnext Technology ecosystem and enables integration into KNX infrastructures via suitable interfaces and ecosystems, for example via solutions from Symcon.

For integration into existing building infrastructures, the Catan C1 features suitable interfaces, libraries, and partner solutions for common protocols and systems. In particular, these include integration into KNX environments via IP-based solutions such as Symcon. The controller can also be integrated into IT and cloud systems enabling lighting, shading, HVAC, and energy management systems to be orchestrated uniformly.

The Catan product family has been designed in accordance with the principles of the circular economy and is Cradle to Cradle Certified® (Bronze). The focus here is on material transparency, a durable design, maintainability, and reuse. The modular design supports retrofit scenarios in particular and extends the service life in the field. Typical applications include room automation for lighting, shading, and ventilation, building automation across all trades including HVAC, monitoring, and error messaging, energy management applications with load management and transparency, as well as modernization scenarios in existing buildings with successive migration and hybrid infrastructures. “With Catan C1, we are providing integrators and operators with an open, modularly extendable platform that can be integrated seamlessly into KNX-based environments – for example via Symcon. This means that existing infrastructures can continue to be used and that projects in existing buildings can be extended sustainably and implemented efficiently in new buildings”, says Steffen Mehnert, Director of Industry Management and Automation at Phoenix Contact.
