Software update 1.8 for CHARX control modular AC charging controllers

The CHARX control modular AC charging controller from Phoenix Contact is the centerpiece of intelligent and future-proof charging infrastructure. With the new software release 1.8, it not only meets the current requirements of the RED Directive, but is also well prepared for the upcoming Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

The RED Directive (EN 18031) will become mandatory from August 2025. Among other things, it calls for the protection of charging points with wireless connections such as RFID, WLAN, and cellular communication systems against unauthorized access. The CHARX control modular charging controller meets this requirement with a comprehensive security concept that effectively prevents tampering, data misuse, and cyberattacks. It therefore follows the principle of “Secure today. Resilient for tomorrow”.

Software update 1.8 adds a comprehensive cybersecurity concept to the CHARX control modular AC charging controller. A role-based access system (RBAC) with password protection, mandatory password change on first login, and protection mechanisms against brute force attacks and IP blocking ensure end-to-end access control.

Update security has also been significantly strengthened. Software updates are secured by RSA-PSS signatures with SHA-512. In addition, the software is regularly checked for vulnerabilities. So-called Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) are continuously compared with CVE databases. These measures not only ensure compliance with the RED Directive. They prepare operators and manufacturers for the upcoming requirements of the Cyber Resilience Act.

CHARX control modular is designed to be installed in closed control cabinets and protects sensitive data with integrated digital security mechanisms. This means that the controller meets high IT and operational safety requirements and is ideal for safety-critical charging infrastructure. Manufacturers and operators benefit from a robust, scalable, and standard-compliant solution. This can be flexibly integrated into various applications – from smart home chargers and semi-public charging points on company premises right through to complex charging parks in public spaces.
Software update 1.8 will be available from September in the download area on the respective item page.
