Coupling various sectors and stakeholders, such as power grids, buildings, local generators, charging stations, and electric vehicles, is becoming ever more important for the future of e-mobility.

Communication is therefore the key to sustainable and integrated e-mobility infrastructure that is based on renewable energies. This includes, for example, the integration of electric vehicles into the smart grid or smart home, efficient and user-friendly business processes, and device and patch management for charging park operators.

All these services require secure communication based on various protocols. With the new generation of controllers CHARX control modular, its open Linux platform, and Phoenix Contact’s application expertise, you are ideally prepared for these challenges.

3000 class of the controller family CHARX control modular

With an overall width of just 37.6 mm, the 3000 class provides you with a smart controller with all functions and full connectivity:

  • Ethernet and 4G cellular communication
  • Dynamic charging and load management
  • Backend integration via Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP)
  • Vehicle-to-grid communication in accordance with ISO 15118
  • Open Linux platform for customer applications

Manage up to 48 charging points with a 3000-class controller. Higher-level systems for billing and building management can be seamlessly connected via Modbus/TCP or MQTT.

1000 class of the controller family CHARX control modular with numerous interfaces

The 1000-class controller, with a housing width of just 18.8 mm, provides you with all interfaces and functions necessary for a standards-compliant charging process:

  • Charging socket or charging cable
  • Contactor
  • RFID identification
  • Energy measurement
  • Residual current monitoring
  • Charging connector release in the event of mains failure
  • Freely configurable I/Os, for example, for LED control

The 1000-class controller can therefore be used without difficulty as a stand-alone controller for single charging points. Or you can align it next to a 3000-class controller to extend this with up to 12 charging points.

Charging process on charging station is billed - invoice appears on the smartphone

With our package precertified by the VDE, the billing of charging processes that is compliant with German measurement and calibration law can be easily implemented, substantially simplifying the certification process of your AC charging station. The package contains:

  • Built-in display
  • Signing energy meter
  • Charging controller software
  • Complete documentation with test reports

Your advantages:

  • Presentation of up to 12 charging points on one display saves costs
  • Real-time visualization of data relevant to calibration laws provides design flexibility
  • Tamper-proof software reduces the sealing effort involved
  • All hardware and software components from a single source

Parking garage with electric car charging stations

With our CHARX control modular charging controllers, electric car batteries can be charged intelligently. Moreover, they are also able to return electricity to the grid whenever necessary. In this way, vehicle fleets become profitable energy storage facilities by using e-cars as electricity buffers.

The technology behind this is called vehicle-to-grid (V2G). The technical requirements and underlying conditions are described in ISO 15118. CHARX control modular meets this standard already, and is thus prepared for vehicle-to-grid.

Easy handling From installation through to maintenance

Charging controller modules in the CHARX control modular family
Plug-and-play: The modules connected one after the other on the DIN rail are supplied with power via the DIN rail connector and automatically detected in the local network. This reduces wiring effort considerably.
Charging controllers from the CHARX control modular family are wired with Push-in connection technology
Wiring: The plug-in front connections with Push-in connection technology enable tool-free wiring of the control modules, which significantly reduces installation time
Configuring CHARX control modular in the web-based management system
Startup: The controller modules are intuitively configured via web-based management. With just a few clicks in the web-based management system, you can copy over the configuration of one charging point to others.
Module replacement for the CHARX control modular charging controller
Maintenance: The plug-in front connections with Lock and Release technology allow modules to be replaced quickly and without any rewiring work

Scaleable for every application From a home charger to a parking garage

Example integration of a CHARX control modular class 1000 charging controller in a single home charger without communication connection
Example 1: Carport with single home charger without communication connection. The class 1000 controller already has all the necessary functions for single charging points, such as residual current detection or charging connector release in the event of a power failure. Access rights can be granted by adding users to an RFID allow list.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3150 charging controller in a single charging point with wireless backend connection in the Smart City
Example 2: Single charging point with wireless backend integration in the smart city. The class 3150 controller allows the wireless integration of charging points into billing systems via the integrated 4G modem and the OCPP protocol. Due to the compact design, charging stations can be integrated into streetlamps, for example.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3100 and class 1000 charging controllers into three double charging points with backend connection and terminal on a company parking lot
Example 3: Company parking lot with three double charging points and terminal with backend connection. A double charging station made up of one 3100-class and one 1000-class controller manages two subordinate double charging points, each made up of one 3000-class and one 1000-class controller. The touch terminal and backend system are connected via the 3100-class controller.
Example integration of the CHARX control modular class 3000 and class 1000 charging controllers in a parking garage with 48 charging points and a central control cabinet with backend connection
Example 4: Parking garage with 48 charging points and a central control cabinet with backend connection. One 3000-class controller and eleven 1000-class controllers are connected via DIN rail connector to form a cluster of 12 charging points. The class 3000 controller is used to manage three additional clusters of the same structure, meaning a total of 48 charging points.
