Oil fields are systems which consist of distributed pumps working independently. These pumps may be several kilometers apart. There is often no network cabling between the pumping stations. There is typically no GSM network which can be used for data transmission.
For some years, however, there has been a trend towards the digitalization of new oil fields as well as oil fields that have been in operation for many years (digital oilfield). This digitalization enables faster and more cost-effective diagnostics as well as more efficient monitoring. In the past, employees had to cross difficult terrain in all kinds of weather, going from pump to pump to read the data locally.
Digital monitoring can be used to acquire binary input signals in the simplest case, such as valve settings. However, analog signals are also acquired. These include temperatures, pressure values, and flow rates, for example. The signals are cyclically displayed in the control room, which is some distance away, and further processed. Secure signal transmission is an important consideration. The continuous monitoring of all oil platforms is only possible using a robust data transmission method that is suitable for industrial applications.
Another key requirement for the products used arises from the fact that the systems are primarily installed outdoors. The environmental conditions require products with extended temperature ranges as well as certifications for use in the Ex area.
The Phoenix Contact solution offers three main functions:
At the oil pump, signals are collected from zone 1 or 2 and sent cyclically via Trusted Wireless. In the control room, the acquired data is either displayed on separate monitors or optionally sent to a higher-level SCADA/DCS system. Open software interfaces are used for this purpose. Phoenix Contact offers established interfaces, which are supported by many system manufacturers, such as OPC, Modbus, SQL Server, MySQL. In addition, there is the option of using open TCP/IP communication.
