The USA is using the power of the sun for positive climate change

Reduction of the carbon footprint through renewable energy systems.

Project goal

To reduce dependence on the power grid, the American subsidiary has installed a 961-kilowatt photovoltaic system on the roof. At peak times, up to 30% of the total energy requirement is now generated by the system.

Milestones

  • Selection of a planning and installation company for the solar system
  • Implementation and installation of the system

$150,000

savings on electricity costs per year

30%

energy requirement coverage with solar power

Two systems for more climate friendliness

The solar project is another step towards reducing the US subsidiary’s carbon footprint. The solar array on the roof of the logistics center now complements the already installed combined heat, power, and cooling system, which generates 50% of the US facility’s electricity. On sunny days in spring and fall, the two systems should generate enough electricity to supply the entire facility. Additional electricity from the grid is still required at peak times and on cloudy days.

To design the rooftop solar array, Phoenix Contact USA worked with Gatter & Diehl Consulting Engineers and Terrasol Energies, Inc. Numerous Phoenix Contact products are used in the monitoring part of the system.

Photovoltaic panels as far as the eye can see: the solar array consists of 2,185 photovoltaic panels from SunPower, which can generate up to 961 kW. A $250,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and a $270,000 grant from the PPL ACT 129 fund helped offset the $1.8 million investment in the solar array.

Phoenix Contact USA is leading the way: implementing change that serves the community and the company. The subsidiary received the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in April 2023. This is the fourth time that Phoenix Contact USA has received this award.
