What is industrial automation?
Industrial automation replaces decisions made by a human being with industrial automation systems. This increases the feasibility, productivity, safety, reliability and quality of these automated processes. Industrial automation often forms a separate category in automation because of the environment in which automation is required. High or low temperatures, humidity, vibrations and dust characterize this particular environment and place specific demands on the automation systems.
PLC and DCS
Two types of automation systems form the core of industrial automation technology; namely, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). These systems meet the specific needs of the industrial environment.
The fourth industrial revolution
Industrial automation further increases its contribution to wealth levels through integration with other digital systems, such as IT systems. This potential integration has started a new period in technological development and is called the fourth industrial revolution. The collaboration between IT and IA has produced a new term, Operational Technology (OT). IT professionals use this term for all forms of automation that do not fall within office automation.
