When buildings need to do more than just function

Building projects are becoming more complex: Increasing energy requirements, new regulatory mandates, and a growing number of technical systems must be balanced against tight deadlines, high cost-efficiency requirements, and the need for clear, repeatable standards. This is exactly where the CATAN C1 open control platform comes in. As an open controller based on PLCnext Technology, it can be flexibly integrated into different system landscapes and equipped with various software solutions from the PLCnext Store. This creates a technical foundation that enables buildings to be operated safely, scalably, and efficiently. In concrete terms, this means clear structures, standardized logic, and a control platform that can be used efficiently both in new buildings and in renovation projects with existing KNX infrastructure. The CATAN C1 hardware basis with its integrated KNX IP router thus enables straightforward connection for system partners such as Symcon.

Overview of the main features

RS-485 interfaces
The two RS-485 interfaces can be conveniently configured for BIAS via software settings and without any additional tools. To facilitate simple integration into existing building and automation systems, both interfaces support the common Modbus/RTU, DMX, and BACnet MS/TP protocols.

Integration into the KNX infrastructure
The CATAN C1 control platform has a KNX TP interface with integrated KNX IP router function. This enables direct access to your KNX system, without additional gateways. This makes interaction with KNX-based automation particularly efficient and flexible. Thanks to its router function, CATAN C1 can even be used as part of the KNX IP backbone infrastructure. This also makes it possible to program KNX TP devices using ETS.

Audio support for servicing processes
In room automation, speakers are installed in the ceiling or raised floor. When servicing is required, searching for the devices using plans can be time-consuming. To simplify this process, speakers are integrated into the controller and the extension modules. The acoustic signals make it much easier to find the devices.

Future-proof networking with Single Pair Ethernet
The Catan product family relies on Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) as the basis for end-to-end communication for networking the controller and extension modules. This allows up to 16 extension modules to be connected to the control platform efficiently, in a space-saving manner, and over long distances using simple telecommunication lines. The modules can be installed at a distance of up to 350 m.

CATAN C1 control platform in the control cabinet with touch display – commissioning and operation

Quick start for initial applications

The CATAN C1 control platform is designed for practical use, featuring a clear modular structure, DIN rail-mount format, and time-saving commissioning. When combined with Symcon’s software solution, KNX topologies can be integrated, and energy management and grid integration requirements can be effectively implemented.

Quick start in five steps:

  1. Installation of the CATAN C1 building controller and extension modules
  2. Selection and commissioning of suitable software solutions (e.g., Symcon app and license)
  3. KNX connection and assignment
  4. Integration of additional project-specific protocols (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, etc.)
  5. Function test

Straightforward integration of KNX

With its app, PLCnext Technology partner Symcon offers a powerful solution for the integration, visualization, and implementation of individual applications in the KNX environment. This means that, in addition to the KNX system, other bus systems and I/O-based systems can also be easily connected, visualized, and logically linked together. This provides an ideal basis for customized functions and clear operating concepts. When combined with the CATAN C1 control platform, this creates real added value: CATAN C1 provides a structured foundation for automation and control based on clear rules and reliable standards. Building on this, Symcon handles the integration, visualization, and application-specific functions. This allows for the proper planning of energy and load management, as well as the targeted implementation of the requirements set out in Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act and Section 9 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act. The result is a transparent, clean, and scalable KNX architecture that is easy to install, straightforward to operate, and flexible enough to adapt to customer requirements, thereby ensuring future-proof building operation.
