CHARX connect modular AC charging sockets

The charging socket that adapts Choose the design, power, and scope of functions

With our CHARX connect modular type 2 charging sockets, we provide you with a clever modular system that allows you to freely combine all components. You can choose the design, mounting type, charging power, and scope of functions of the charging socket to perfectly suit your charging station or home charger – both technically and visually. The robust, fiberglass-reinforced housings of all system components extend their service life, protect against weather, and make vandalism more difficult.

The modular system offers the following options:

  • Actuator position at 12 o’clock, 8 o’clock, or 4 o’clock
  • PCB mounting or wired connection
  • Charging current of 20 A or 32 A, 1-phase or 3-phase
  • Optional features:
    • PTC temperature sensors
    • Protective cover in round or square design
    • Status display with freely controllable RGB LEDs
    • Customer logo or “C” marking in accordance with DIN EN 17186 instead of the Phoenix Contact logo
    • Shutter for touch protection in accordance with IPXXD

The modular system of the AC charging sockets CHARX connect modular can be custom configured

Step 1 of 4: Select the actuator position of the type 2 charging socket
Step 2 of 4: Select connection method, charging power, and optional temperature sensors for the type 2 charging socket
Step 3 of 4: Select optional IP55 protective cover and optional LED status display for the type 2 charging socket
Step 4 of 4: Select optional shutter for the type 2 charging socket
Step 1 of 4: Select the actuator position of the type 2 charging socket

Actuator at 12 o’clock, 8 o’clock, or 4 o’clock
The charging socket is equipped with a 4-pos. locking actuator with 12 V supply. Choose between three actuator positions so that the charging socket fits optimally into the available installation space of your charging station.

Compact, space-saving design
With an installation depth of just 54 mm (without strain relief and actuator), our third generation charging sockets offer space savings of up to 38% compared to their predecessors. This makes them perfect for particularly compact charging stations with limited installation space.

Specially coated, fully molded contacts
Silver-plated contacts are now standard in the e-mobility market. We go a step further by also coating the power and signal contacts of our products in a special and complex process. This results in outstanding corrosion protection, an exceptionally long service life, and efficient power transmission. The contacts are also fully molded. This makes them waterproof, dirtproof, and particularly resistant to lateral forces.

Step 2 of 4: Select connection method, charging power, and optional temperature sensors for the type 2 charging socket

Direct mounting on the PCB
If you would like to mount the charging socket directly on the PCB, you can do this using the separately available PCB pin contacts, which are designed for 1- and 3-phase charging with up to 32 A. The PCB contacts are assembled on your PCB via wave soldering, so that the charging socket can then be plugged in and easily removed again for maintenance.

Classic connection via cable set
If you opt for the classic wired connection of the charging socket within the charging station, we offer plug-in cable sets that are also easy to maintain. By choosing the separately available cable set, you can define the maximum charging power of your charging socket:

  • 1- or 3-phase
  • 20 A or 32 A
  • 0.3 m, 0.7 m, or 1.5 m

Optional temperature monitoring
For added safety, we offer the cable set of the highest performance class (3-phase, 32 A) with integrated PTC sensors as an option. This allows the temperature at the power contacts to be measured and evaluated in order to interrupt the charging process in the event of overheating and protect people and the charging station.

Step 3 of 4: Select optional IP55 protective cover and optional LED status display for the type 2 charging socket

Increased IP protection and easy operation
With an optional protective cover, you can increase the charging socket’s degree of protection to IP55 and integrate an LED status display at the same time. With one-handed operation, the cover can be opened effortlessly with the charging connector, without needing to use your other hand.

Round or square design
Choose whether the round or square protective cover better suits the design of your home charger or charging station.

Optional LED display
The protective cover is available with integrated LED status display as an option. This allows you to see the status of the charging point at a glance. The RGB LEDs, which can be freely controlled via PWM (pulse width modulation), can glow, flash, and pulse in all RGB colors to match your branding. The precise light guide technology ensures a homogeneous light pattern with optimum diffusion. Power supply via the mounting screws also simplifies installation and maintenance.

Logo options
The protective cover is available optionally:

  • With imprinted Phoenix Contact logo
  • With imprinted customer logo (on request)
  • With sticker field for customer logo
  • With “C” marking in accordance with DIN EN 17186
  • Without logo, sticker field, or marking

Step 4 of 4: Select optional shutter for the type 2 charging socket

Safe touch protection
With the optional shutter, you can achieve IPXXD degree of protection to ensure safe touch protection for the power and signal contacts, which is a standard requirement in some European countries. The shutter therefore increases electrical safety and also protects the charging station against vandalism.

Intuitive operation
Operation is intuitive – simply inserting the charging connector opens the shutter. There is no need to turn or push the charging connector.

Compatibility
Our shutter is compatible with all type 2 charging sockets and protective covers from Phoenix Contact.

Whether it is making a phone call or carrying their shopping – in everyday charging situations, electric car drivers often only have one hand free to connect the charging cable to the charging station.

That is why we have consistently designed our AC charging sockets for one-handed operation: Both the protective cover and the shutter can be opened effortlessly with the charging connector, without needing to use your other hand. A small feature that makes a big difference and is appreciated by many of our customers.

PTC temperature sensors at the power contacts of the CHARX connect modular AC charging sockets

The optional temperature sensors reliably protect the charging socket from overheating, which can occur due to foreign objects or contamination, for example. This protects users from danger and prevents expensive damage to the charging station.

The sensors consist of a chain of PTC resistors, located at each power contact. By detecting the resistance values, the charging controller can initiate an immediate shutdown when a limit temperature is exceeded.

Award ceremony for the German Design Award 2023 and iF Design Award 2023 for the CHARX connect modular AC charging sockets

CHARX connect modular won two prestigious design awards for its modular and attractive design:

  • iF Design Award 2023
  • German Design Award 2023

Our clever modular principle was a key factor in this win by enabling all components to be freely combined and tailored to the individual requirements of the customer’s application.
