There are huge changes afoot in the field of telecommunications. For years now, many providers have been replacing their old ISDN or analog telephone networks with “all IP” technology. Even the market leader, Deutsche Telekom, is planning to switch off analog telephony and the ISDN network before the end of 2018.
While the switch-over of telephone networks can normally be carried out for private customers without a great deal of effort, many commercial users, such as operators of wind turbine generators, see the communication switch-over as a huge challenge. Because communication between the control room and the wind turbine generator or wind farm would no longer then be possible over a traditional ISDN or analog modem but rather over the Internet, the technology used at many systems has to be adapted, which can often be costly.
The simple plug-and-play solution from Phoenix Contact is realized with the FL COMSERVER serial device server with a web-based configuration interface. In the Modem operating mode, the FL COMSERVER acts as a dial-up modem, whereby the connection is established and terminated by AT commands. This provides a solution both for the wind farm and the control room based on modern IP communication simply by completely replacing the traditional modem without the need for any additional changes to the wind turbine generator or SCADA system Communication between FL COMSERVER systems is controlled in the devices. This is only where the allocations between the previously used telephone number and the new IP address are created via the easy-to-use configuration interface.
In addition, only a LAN or WAN connection is needed between the FL COMSERVER devices. This offers an encrypted and therefore secure VPN connection which is automatically protected to the highest degree against unauthorized access.
Integration into existing infrastructure
If an Internet connection is already available at your wind turbine generator or wind farm, this can be used without any problems. An FL MGUARD RS2000 router, featuring VPN functionality, can provide the necessary encryption. But even the more remote wind turbine facilities without the appropriate Internet connection can be connected easily via a mobile network. In these cases, the 3002T-3G/4G TC routers ensure the required connection and encryption, thereby putting security at the highest level.
Optional uninterruptible power supply
Should a severe communication failure occur in your wind turbine generator or wind farm due to a supply voltage failure in the communication system, the solution can be extended with a compact UPS system in order to remedy the situation. The UPS ensures that communication is maintained in the event of a voltage failure, and therefore allows you to send an active status update to the control room, or to any address via e-mail or SMS.
