Ex-i I/Os: intrinsically safe components for data acquisition in the Ex area

Ex-i products from Phoenix Contact provide safe and reliable automation in potentially explosive areas. Intrinsic safety, or IS for short, is the technique that specifies the connection and operation of intrinsically safe devices.

Your Inline I/O station is installed in zone 2, while the connected sensors and actuators are installed in zone 0, 1 or 2 as required.

Safe electrical isolation is required for intrinsically safe systems. For reliable power supply of 1 Ampere to your intrinsically safe I/O modules, Phoenix Contact offers a special Inline terminal:
the Ex-i power supply.

Your advantages:

  • The diagnostic LEDS indicate the station capacity in the stages: normal, high, and overload. This enables you to reduce malfunctions and the risk of accident.
  • The power supply provides the necessary spacing between intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe connecting wires.

Ex-i I/O modules for digital signals

Connect Ex-approved sensors and actuators as well as NAMUR sensors to these intrinsically safe Ex-i I/O modules. All four channels can be independently selected and configured for use as either input or output. For example, for relay contacts, buzzers, signal towers or solenoid valves.

Locate errors quickly: the diagnostic LEDs on each channel indicate an open circuit or short circuit.

The four channels of these intrinsically safe I/O modules can be used in different ways:

  • For current loops of 0 mA ... 20 mA
  • For current loops of 4 mA ... 20 mA
  • For the input voltage range of 0 V ... 10 V

Analog Ex-i I/O modules support all three formats with a 16 bits maximum resolution.

Ex-i I/O modules for monitoring temperatures

The intrinsically safe I/O modules for temperature sensors provide four channels that can be configured independently of one another. All channels support various functions for recording temperatures:

  • Resistive temperature sensors such as Pt 100 in 2 or 3-wire technology
  • Various standard thermocouple types for temperature sensors
    (J, K, E, R, S, and T)
  • Acquisition of -100 mV to +100 mV signals
  • Resistance detection 0 Ω ... 800 Ω or 0 kΩ ... 5 kΩ
