High-availability networks

The Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) supports data communication without switching times, therefore enabling maximum possible network availability. This is achieved through PRP network redundancy, which is based on two independent, active paths between two devices.

The sender uses two independent network interfaces which send the same data simultaneously. The redundancy control protocol therefore makes sure that the recipient only uses the first data packet and discards the second. If just one packet is received, the recipient knows that a failure has occurred on the other path.

Versatile use

PRP is suitable for Ethernet protocols such as PROFINET, IEC 61850, EtherNet/IP™, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus/TCP as well as other protocols above Ethernet Layer 2.

PRP standardized network redundancy can also be used independently of the network topology and the redundancy mechanisms used in the respective network. The redundancy method is therefore suitable for all energy applications and is also ideal for chemical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, and process technology as well as sensitive production systems.

The FL RED redundancy modules from Phoenix Contact make it easy to set up a parallel, high-availability PRP network without any configuration at all. During startup, you simply need to make sure that the components are connected correctly in accordance with the color coding on the device. Ethernet devices which do not support the Parallel Redundancy Protocol can be integrated into this high-availability network infrastructure without involving laborious configuration.

Diagnostic functions via LEDs and a floating signal contact also support setup and operation of the parallel network.

The redundancy modules also satisfy the extreme electromagnetic, electrostatic, and climatic requirements of standards IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 for use in energy systems. A power supply with a wide supply range also ensures reliable operation even in the event of a fluctuating supply voltage in the system.
