Phoenix Contact receives 2012 Hermes Award

Award received for Lightning Monitoring System

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Phoenix Contact received Deutsche Messe AG’s 2012 Hermes Award for its Lightning Monitoring System.

Dr. Martin Wetter, Business Unit Manager for Surge Voltage Protection, accepted the award from Federal Minister of Education and Research Anette Schavan during the opening ceremonies of the Hanover Trade Show, where German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao were in attendance.

“There has never been a product of this kind before,” says Dr. Wetter. “Distributed energy production can be made safer and more reliable with the use of this new system.”

The award confirms the system’s importance for the industry, especially for renewable energies. The measurement of the number and intensity of lightning strikes in a wind turbine’s rotor blades, for example, enables users to conduct maintenance on an as-needed basis. When lightning strikes, data is transmitted online. This enables remote service technicians to ascertain whether rotor blades were damaged, and if so which ones, and when the next maintenance should take place. Manual preventative maintenance is no longer required. This is a major advantage, considering the time-consuming and cost-intensive maintenance of offshore platforms, and it ensures system availability.

The Hermes Award was awarded this year for the ninth time. Deutsche Messe AG created the award to honor innovative companies. Phoenix Contact was nominated for the Hermes Award for the first time in 2005.
