Back to school for National Engineers Week

In honor of National Engineers Week, Phoenix Contact engineers are continuing their tradition of teaching science class at a local middle school.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – In honor of National Engineers Week, Phoenix Contact engineers are continuing their tradition of teaching science class at a local middle school. National Engineers Week (Feb 19 through 25) promotes engineering careers to young people and honors engineers’ contributions to society.

For the fifth consecutive year, Phoenix Contact engineers are sharing their love of science with sixth-grade students at Middletown Area Middle School. Each day, the engineers combine theory with hands-on activities designed to make science fun. Lessons include:

    Tuesday: Build a catapult
    Wednesday: Build an electric motor
    Thursday: Downhill “cookie tin” races
Friday: Van de Graaf generator demonstration

Our talented and enthusiastic engineering staff is always coming up with innovative designs,” said Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact USA. “But we’re also proud of the strong commitment they show to the community and their profession by working with Middletown Area School District. Every year, we receive letters from the students about how fun the lessons are.” Brian Linton, Matt Varano, Missy Sommer, Scott Faulkner and Patty Marrero comprise the planning committee. Other engineer volunteers are: Mike Correll, Chris Brink, Terry Barber, Arnold Offner and Ananth Benedict.

This is just one of several Engineers Week activities at Phoenix Contact. Other events included a banquet to honor the company’s practicing engineers, a lunch-and-learn for non-engineer employees and the judging of the 2012 Nanoline Contest. On Monday, a team from Infinity Charter School won a trip to Hanover Fair for designing a “Smart Solar Mobile Charging Station.”
