Phoenix Contact engineers teach science class again for National Engineers Week

It’s National Engineers Week, and for the fourth consecutive year, Phoenix Contact engineers are teaching science class at a local school.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – It’s National Engineers Week, and for the fourth consecutive year, Phoenix Contact engineers are teaching science class at a local school. National Engineers Week (Feb. 20 through 26) promotes engineering careers to young people and honors engineers’ contributions to society.

Nine Phoenix Contact engineers are teaching sixth-grade science class at Middletown Area Middle School, located a few miles from Phoenix Contact USA headquarters near Harrisburg, Pa. Each day, the engineers will combine theory with hands-on activities designed to make science fun. Lessons include:

Tuesday: Build a catapult
Wednesday: Build an electric motor
Thursday: Downhill “cookie tin” races
Friday: Van de Graaf generator demonstration

“This partnership with the Middletown School District has become a great tradition,” said Dave Skelton, vice president of Phoenix Contact’s Americas Business Unit.  “Phoenix Contact is fortunate to have a team of talented and creative engineers. We hope that their enthusiasm for their work inspires some of these children to consider a career in engineering.”

This year’s engineer volunteers are Scott Faulkner, Missy Sommer, Matt Varano, Dave McMullen, Mike Correll, Chris Brink, Terry Barber, Arnold Offner and Ananth Benedict.

Other Phoenix Contact activities for Engineers Week include a banquet honoring approximately 60 practicing engineers, a lunch and learn session for non-engineer employees and the annual Nanoline Contest judging, which was held on Monday. The winners, Lower Dauphin High School, won a trip to the 2011 Hanover Fair for designing a device that monitors outlets in the home.
