Phoenix Contact is the 2018 Tool Shop of the Year

Phoenix Contact

Once again, Phoenix Contact wins the "Excellence in Production" competition, meaning that it is the Tool Shop of 2018.

Following 2016, the in-house tool shop has earned the top spot for the second time, claiming overall victory at the competition. During a celebratory award ceremony in the coronation hall of Aachen Town Hall on November 7, 2018, Dr. Sven Holsten, Head of the Tool Shop, accepted the prize. At the annual competition, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) determined the best tool shop in German-speaking Europe. Alongside the overall victory, Phoenix Contact also won in the category "In-house tool shops with more than 50 employees."

The jury praised proactive technology development in Industrie 4.0 areas and additive manufacturing as drivers of innovation for the entire Phoenix Contact Group. "The focus of the in-house tool shop on future orientation is also reflected in the high level of qualification and continuing education of employees," explained award presenter Klaus Hilmer, Head of Technology Development and Toolmaking at Festo Polymer, the previous year's winner.

The breadth of manufacturing capability means that it is not just screws and plastic and metal parts that are produced by Phoenix Contact, but also highly automated assembly machines, punching tools, bending tools and injection molds. The primary plant in the global network for building injection molds is located at the headquarters in Blomberg. It is an industrial tool shop with two new tool segments and a service and repair segment.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) and the Laboratory for Machine Tools of RWTH Aachen University worked with an expert panel of judges to choose the best tool shops and die shops in four categories based on a detailed comparison and to visit these companies. The ten judges from industry, politics and science then chose the 14 finalists, the winners in each category and the overall winners. A total of 311 tool and die shops participated in the competition; of these, 50 were placed on the short list. The "Excellence in Production" competition was held this year for the 15th time.
