Web-based management

Web-based management is a way to parameterize, diagnose, and start up devices that are equipped with a web server using web pages. The web pages are stored on the device and are made available by the device web server. Phoenix Contact devices that are equipped with an Ethernet interface and IP protocol should offer web-based management with a uniform design.

Web-based management page layout
  1. Language: switcher Up to three languages can be displayed next to each other in the national language. More than three languages are offered as drop-down (without flag). English is the default language. Each device supports at least English. For the first startup, the page is displayed in English.
  2. Signal chain with logo: The logo is linked to www.phoenixcontact.com. The page opens in a new browser tab.
  3. Horizontal navigation (optional): This may wrap when the width of the web page is reached.
  4. Navigation tree (obligatory)
  5. Content area  
  6. Device information: This information is visible on all sub-pages (e.g., firmware version, device number)
  7. Copyright: The copyright may not be a link.
  8. Legal notes


The following also applies:

  • Verdana is used for headings (the typographical rules also apply)
  • There is no search in web-based management
  • Settings are only made in the content area of the page
  • No radio buttons are used. Instead, combo boxes and check boxes are used.

A navigation tree is always on the left-hand side. This navigation element corresponds to the facets.

A product image (product photo from the catalog) and the product name with order number is located above the navigation tree. There is a link to the start page of the currently selected product both on the image and on the product name.

As an option, horizontal navigation can be used. For example, this can be used for selecting devices in a station

  1. Order of the menu items: Basically the order of the menu items should be adhered to in order to ensure the same representation for all Phoenix Contact devices.
  2. Names of the sub-items: Adding the name of the main item to the name of the sub-item, e.g., IP address instead of IP configuration, should always be avoided.

In addition to help in the main menu (optional), information about a special item is also provided as a tool tip. The tool tip can include not only text, but also images.

An “i” appears after every item that offers help. The icon opens when you either hover over it with the mouse (one second delay) or you click the tool tip.

The web-based management is limited to the use of the following technologies:

  • HTML/CSS (HTML 5 is recommended)
  • JavaScript (jQuery is recommended)
  • Optional security (https)

Browser support

  • At least Internet Explorer Version 8 is supported.

Test requirements:

  • Design: The elementary functions must be properly displayed and function in the browser mentioned.
  • Function: The interaction between web-based management and device firmware must be tested for correct function.

Print function

The print function of the browser is used. Only the page content should be printed, without frame and language switcher. The necessary style sheet is supplied with the template.

Third-party licenses

Notes on general conditions:

  • Sources that are subject to GPL may not be changed (otherwise compulsory publication is necessary).

When using third-party licenses:

  • The license supplier must be named.
  • The license conditions of the license supplier must be stored in the device.
  • The license conditions must be available at least in English and if possible, in German.

Which licenses can we use?

  • All third-party software licenses must first be checked and approved by the legal department.

Software License Terms (SLT)

The Phoenix Contact Software License Terms (SLT) must be stored on the device and must be printable. The SLT are available in RTF file format from Phoenix Contact's Legal Department. If it is not possible to store the SLT on the device for technical reasons (e.g., insufficient storage space), the SLT may be omitted – unlike in the case of third-party licenses. However, the SLT must be referenced at the very least when concluding the sales agreement.


The copyright may not be a link. It is specified with year, preferably from the first creation up to the current modification (e. g., © 2001 - 2013 Phoenix Contact).
