Contact systems

We make high demands on the metal contact surfaces in order to protect connectors against corrosion and environmental influences. Naturally, we use only high-grade copper alloys and Cr(VI)-free processed steel parts.

Tin-plated contact system

Tin-plated contact systems are a practical and inexpensive solution for soldering applications.

Tin initiates an intermetallic reaction with base materials, such as brass or bronze. This can lead to increased corrosion. A nickel resistive layer is used in Phoenix Contact products to prevent this reaction.

This means for you:

  • Reliable contacting can be achieved at voltages > 20 mV and currents > 100 mA
  • Gas-tight contact zones with low contact resistance
  • Permanently unchanged surface quality
  • No whisker growth later on

High level of conductivity at higher currents – you can benefit from this excellent characteristic of silver layers.

Used in our high-current connectors, these surface systems offer the following advantages:

  • Low contact force
  • Large number of insertion/withdrawal cycles

The main advantage of gold layers is their resistance to corrosion in various different aggressive media.

With these characteristics, gold surfaces for voltages < 20 mV and currents < 3 mA are ideal and durable surfaces with > 100 insertion/withdrawal cycles.

Integrated double steel springs provide additional safety in the event of power and temperature fluctuations.

Used in our connectors for high-current applications, the double steel spring offers the following advantages:

  • No contact corrosion as the double steel spring exerts additional pressure on the contact
  • Long-term stability of the contact resistance
