Although standard products can generally be used in the AC area of solar systems, a more specific approach is required for the DC area. In order to keep cable losses to a minimum, PV panels are connected to strings, thereby increasing the system voltage.
Off-load voltages of PV systems can be up to 1500 V DC.
These high DC voltages place particular demands on the components used. In contrast to AC voltage, the DC voltage that is present enables creepage distances to be created very easily on the surface of insulating elements. As a result, the components used in this area must have greater air clearances and creepage distances.
The individual strings are protected in order to limit reverse currents, which can occur in the event of a short circuit. This preferably takes the form of 10.3 × 38 mm fuses in crystalline modules, and blocking diodes incorporated into the circuit in thin-film modules.

Crystalline modules are characterized by a very high level of efficiency with good light conditions. These offer significantly higher line currents in comparison to the thin-film modules. The compact fuse terminal blocks protect PV cables against dangerous reverse currents. 

Compared to crystalline modules, thin-film modules perform more favorably with less light and are more sensitive to reverse currents. Block diodes connected in series are often used for fast and reliable protection in the case of reverse currents.

The new UBAL Al/Cu series of terminal blocks has been tested in accordance with the latest standards and is particularly suited to applications such as photovoltaics.

These universal terminal blocks make it possible to wire aluminum conductors and copper wires together in the same terminal block.

Al/Cu terminal blocks are available in four cross-section sizes and can therefore be used for the connection of aluminum conductors from 6 mm² to 240 mm² and copper wires from 2.5 mm² to 240 mm².

The lever-type fuse terminal blocks of the UK 10,3-HESI 1000 V and UK 10,3-HESI 1500 V series have been optimized to meet the demands of photovoltaics. They have been qualified in accordance with the latest standards (IEC 60947-3, IEC 60269-2, IEC 60269-6) and are UL listed. The UK 10,3-HESI terminal blocks are easy and safe to use. The fuses can be replaced quickly and easily, thanks to the levers, which are actuated from the front.

The 1000 V variant enables you to save even more time with versions featuring a visual display. In this case, the defective fuse is indicated by an LED.

Not only are the UK 10,3-HESI devices easy to use, they also boast a touch-proof design, which guarantees a high degree of safety.
