The joint project by the German trade associations BITKOM, VDMA, and ZVEI is implementing the German Federal Government's future project, Industrie 4.0.

In the meantime, 80 different organizations and more than 7000 companies have now become part of one of the largest international networks.

Industrie 4.0 activities in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) region of Germany are being showcased in special exhibitions as part of the “Schaufenster 4.0” (“windows into tomorrow”) initiative.

Together they map out a route through the entire OWL region, providing examples of successful digitalization projects, such as the individual production of signal conditioners in a batch size of one at Phoenix Contact.

The CENTRUM INDUSTRIAL IT (CIIT) center for research and development is the world's first Science-to-Business Center for industrial automation.

Housed under one roof, over 350 experts from companies and institutes are working on and researching the use of information and communication technologies in technical systems. In joint research projects conducted in the CIIT as part of applied basic research, technologies are being developed for the factory of the future. The CIIT is therefore both a production facility and a hub for exchanging ideas regarding all aspects of IT-based automation technology in the technological age.

SmartFactoryOWL – the factory of the future

The Smart Factory initiative of the Fraunhofer IOSB-INA (Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation focusing on Industrial Automation) and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences provides the platform for showcasing application-oriented research into intelligent automation.

Using practical examples, it illustrates the advantages of digitalization in real IT and production environments.

The smart factory of tomorrow built in Kaiserslautern has a fully modular structure.

With standardized interfaces and modern information technology, it enables highly flexible, automated production in line with the Plug and Produce approach, thereby putting the concept of Industrie 4.0 into practice.
