Application

Centralized data management is a key task, in order to be able to efficiently operate large-scale photovoltaics power plants. To operate the systems, various data is acquired, such as yield values, error messages, and operating figures. Data is usually locally archived, on a server in the system.

In order to be able to evaluate the efficiency, recording and archiving over the course of the system life cycle is a must. To this end, Phoenix Contact provides a manufacturer-neutral data management system for recording, archiving, and evaluating direct or calculated operating data. The SOL-DMS makes individually prepared data available to different user groups.

Solution

The SOL-DMS management system from Phoenix Contact is used to visualize data that is normally acquired in a distributed manner in the field and provided by controllers. The data comes from various sources, such as photovoltaic strings, inverters, weather stations or information from the network.

The data from all areas of the application is transmitted to a central server, stored in a database, and made available to the end user. Through the exclusive use of HTML5 functionality, a standard PC or web terminal with a standard browser, such as Firefox, can be used to display the data.

All data acquired is archived in a database in defined time frames and displayed on a web page as a value or historical trend. The logged-in user only sees the data in the trend that belongs to the appropriate user group.

An alarm archive provides an overview of any messages sent in the system. The user can filter the messages according to their area of activity and display these on the interface. If errors arise, for example, an alert is sent via SMS. Those informed are participants who are either the intended recipients due to their role or have been approved to receive messages with certain content or parts thereof.

Visualization
In SOL-DMS, pre-defined object types are stored in the visualization system. This includes, for example: object types such as weather station, section control, string combiner boxes, and DNO Control, for monitoring the network connection conditions. The operator can use these object types as a template. Furthermore, there is the option of integrating and using in-house designs in line with the visualization options.

On the start page, the individual clusters (arrays) are displayed as colored points. When green is displayed, the system is running with the desired performance. There is no need for action. If the point changes color to yellow, this implies a warning. In this case, the array continues to operate, but a check should be carried out.

If the color changes to red, there is an error. The affected system part is no longer supplying energy. A specific alarm is triggered. Blue indicates that maintenance is being carried out in this part of the system. Depending on the current color status in the general overview, the user can view the status of the various arrays, right up to string level, in further sub menus. Thanks to the clear visualization, the user is always kept informed about the system status.

Data archiving

The SOL-DMS records and archives the data during the entire life cycle of the system. This places particular requirements on data archiving with regard to compression and redundancy. The following rule applies to data storage:

  • Storage of basic data every 15 seconds and availability for 24 hours
  • After 24 hours, the data is compressed to a 60 second interval
  • After six months, the data is compressed to a 5 minute value
  • After 2 years, to a value of 15 minutes
  • The data can be stored for up to 25 years
