The testing systems in our laboratory are able to generate surge currents and surge voltages with different pulse shapes. An ImpulseCheck is installed on one of these test systems. This device provides data for our demo system.

Why ImpulseCheck?

Your systems are subjected to electromagnetic interferences every day. The number of interferences and their effects usually go unnoticed, however. Installed surge protective devices (SPDs) protect against surge currents and destructive transients. This improves system availability while helping to safeguard operation. Even SPDs with status indicators, however, do not provide information on how long protection will last. This is where ImpulseCheck comes in and identifies electromagnetic interferences. To this end, Phoenix Contact SPDs reliably detect and indicate previous damage. Exposure to electromagnetic interferences in your system also becomes transparent even without the SPDs installed.

Method of operation

ImpulseCheck is the assistance system for surge protection and enables the continuous monitoring of the system's EMC and the installed surge protective devices (SPDs). Electromagnetic interference and surge currents are detected on each active conductor, allocated a time stamp, and transferred to PROFICLOUD. It is here that the events are analyzed. Key parameters are evaluated and indicated. For Phoenix Contact SPDs, the actual load is determined at all times based on the recorded events. The state of health (SoH) is output for each mode of protection.
Method of operation

Connection and communication

In just a few easy steps, you can affix up to four sensors to the connecting cables of the power supply or an SPD that is actively monitored. Thanks to external sensors, the system can be easily installed or retrofitted in both new and existing systems. If the SPD has a remote indication contact, this is also linked to ImpulseCheck. Power is supplied via a 24 V DC connection. The assistance system connects to the Internet via an Ethernet connection to communicate with PROFICLOUD.

Configuration via web-based management

ImpulseCheck is incorporated in the IT environment via an integrated web-based management system. For this purpose, a direct connection is established between the laptop and ImpulseCheck​, and web-based management​ is accessed. Data such as the IP address or dynamic IP assignment via DHCP, proxy servers and other IT-relevant data are entered. After ImpulseCheck has been configured and incorporated in your IT environment, it is ready to start transmitting data to PROFICLOUD.

ImpulseAnalytics application in PROFICLOUD

Once you have registered and logged into PROFICLOUD, the ImpulseCheck hardware is configured in the ImpulseAnalytics application. To this end, key protective device configuration parameters are entered. The installation date is also important when it comes to quantifying the state of health (SoH) for Phoenix Contact SPDs. Location information or internal contact persons make it easier to identify individual ImpulseCheck installations if several locations are monitored.

A deeply integrated security concept provides you with maximum security. TLS 1.2 (Transport Layer Security) encryption and authentication is used for all data transmission between ImpulseCheck and PROFICLOUD. The methods applied are also used to ensure secure data transfer during online banking.
