What is cloud computing?

In the past, anyone who wanted to use computing capacity was forced to operate their own servers. The required resources had to be calculated and procured, updates had to be installed, backups had to be set up, and the availability of the servers had to be ensured. As a result, companies either expended huge amounts of resources (human and financial) or had to accept cutbacks.

Thanks to the cloud, that’s a thing of the past. The server previously located in the company is now being replaced by professionally operated data centers – the cloud. Resources such as computing power or memory capacity can be provided in virtually unlimited amounts at any time. This works so quickly that even peak loads can be balanced. Issues such as software updates or creating backups are handled by the operator of the respective cloud platform. The cloud opens the door for companies to participate in the world of data – without great cost or effort.

What is the technology behind it?

In the area of technologies used, MQTT is certainly worth mentioning. MQTT is a protocol that is primarily used for communication between machines. In our case, this is the communication between the cloud-capable devices in the field and Proficloud.io, which is handled via MQTT. For this purpose, MQTT offers several advantages at once, such as low computing power requirements, low overhead, and secure communication through TLS encryption.

There are different varieties of cloud systems, but the following points apply to many of them:

  • The existing hardware is shared among different users. This makes it possible to keep costs low, yet still keep the data separate.
  • The required performance can be scaled up or down at short notice. This makes it possible to react quickly to changes.
  • Cloud services are not purchased, but rented. Since every cloud system requires continuous effort from the operator, this is the only way to map the costs involved. This offers the customer the advantage of not having high start-up costs (CAPEX), but instead being able to stretch predictable costs over a longer period of time (OPEX).
  • Since the expenses for operating and maintaining the cloud are covered by the operator, use is low-cost for customers. The customers can focus directly on their actual interests.
