Phoenix Contact challenges tomorrow's engineers in ISA International Student Games
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - As a provider in the 2008 ISA International Student Games, Phoenix Contact has designed a hands-on problem that challenges engineering students to test their classroom learning. The games will be held on the floor of the ISA Expo at the Reliant Center in Houston, beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Twelve teams representing several U.S. regions, as well as Russia, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Colombia, will complete practical engineering and automation exercises designed by Phoenix Contact and three other companies (ABB, Crestron and Siemens). In addition to creating the problems, the provider companies also make real-world equipment available for the students to use in their solution, as opposed to the lab equipment typically available in the classroom.
The four-person teams will rotate through each company's problem within a set amount of time. Representatives from the provider companies will judge the students on how well they completed the tasks. At the end of the day, scores will be tallied and awards will be presented.
"We're excited to work with some of the brightest young engineering students from around the world," said Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact USA. "Phoenix Contact is a strong supporter of engineering education, and nothing beats a fun, hands-on experience where students can apply the automation and control principles learned in school."
Three Phoenix Contact employees, Pat McCurdy, INTERFACE Product Marketing Manager, and INTERFACE Lead Product Marketing Specialists, Ira Sharp and Todd Shadle, will demonstrate the equipment prior to the contest and judge the students' work during the games.
Phoenix Contact is a world leader in electrical connection, electronic interface and industrial automation technologies. A global company with annual sales exceeding 1 billion euro, Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co., Blomberg, Germany, operates 46 international subsidiaries, including Phoenix Contact USA in Middletown, Pa.
