Wunderbot IV: Students to demonstrate robot at Phoenix Contact

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College students demonstrated Wunderbot IV, a robotic vehicle today at Phoenix Contact in Middletown, Pa.  Prior to the demonstration in the company parking lot, students gave an overview of the Wunderbot’s technology.

Wunderbot IV is the fourth generation of the Elizabethtown College Robotics Club’s autonomous robot platform. The students designed and built the vehicle with the guidance of advisor Dr. Joseph Wunderlich.

In June, the Wunderbot team will compete in the 16th Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) in Michigan. The contest challenges students to create a fully autonomous, unmanned ground vehicle that can negotiate an obstacle course within a prescribed time. The club participated in the 2006 IGVC with the Wunderbot III.

Eventually, the students plan for Wunderbot to serve as a virtual campus tour guide. Using a GPS system, the vehicle will identify and “talk” about specific campus buildings as a webcam sends a live streaming video to an online user who can control the input.

Phoenix Contact, a German company with U.S. headquarters located in Middletown, Pa., is a world leader in the manufacture of electrical, electronic and automation technology. As the primary sponsor of the project, Phoenix Contact supplied many of the key components used to build the Wunderbot and provided other financial and technical assistance.
