Packaging and Use in Feeders


The supply of components packaged as tape-on-reel is a prerequisite for automatic processing. Here, the main focus of the industrial standard is on 56 mm (2.205 in.) wide reels. The variety of the range (number of poles) is thus slightly limited, however it is optimized for automated processes. The tape-on-reels can be clamped in off-the-shelf and standard feeders. The components are then available to the feeder platform.



Removing Components

The component is always supplied on the feeder platform in the same position. The figure on the left illustrates an MCV male connector with a "pick and place pad" (connection tool). The component is removed from the reel using standard vacuum pipettes, which means that no special vacuum pipettes are required. The figure on the right illustrates a horizontal version with a flat insulator as the suction surface.


Camera Inspection


Once the component is removed from the reel it is inspected and measured with a camera. THR male connectors are identified and measured by the light metallic heads of the soldering pins, which contrast well against the black housing.



Setting the Component and "Pushing Out"


The male connector is then set. The pin pushes the solder paste through the drill hole. The solder paste is "pushed out" of the drill hole by the pin. Once set, the pin resembles the head of a match. The shape of the pin head and the consistency of the solder paste ensure that the paste that has been pushed through remains adhered on the way to the soldering furnace.

1. Projected solder paste after screen printing (minimum of approximately 0.4 mm [0.016 in.]).

2. The pin pushes some of the paste in front of it and out of the drill hole.

3. The paste that is pushed out loses contact with the remaining mass in the drill hole and adheres to the head of the pin.

4. Once the component is set, the almost dry connector can be seen in the drill hole.
