Using an active repeater of the PSI-REP type can make it possible to install a Profibus network in any of the stub, star and tree structures, unlike the classic line structure. At the same time, the immunity to interference and the maintenance-friendliness are considerably increased. This is ensured by
- the high-quality electrical isolation of 1.5 kV,
- the 16 x bit oversampling and bit retiming as well as
- the start delimiter identification of the repeater.
Owing to these features, an unrestricted cascading of the devices for network extensions becomes possible without limiting the transmission speed.

The integrated optical diagnostics of the PSI-MOS FO converter constantly provides information about the signal quality of the FO path. Complicated calibration with special equipment is not required. If the signal quality deteriorates during operation, a warning is given via a switch contact when the safety reserve is reached. Preventive maintenance is thus possible and a system failure is prevented.
Furthermore, the PSI-MOS FO converters feature an energy-limited optical interface and thus qualify as suitable equipment for zone 1. The complete system is approved for assembly in zone 2.

Use of the PSI-REP repeater in combination with PSI-MOS FO modules allows your Profibus network to be further optimized: Thus, there is choice between copper or FO technology as the optimum transmission medium for each individual section.
Cross wiring inside such a repeater station is carried out conveniently for data and supply using the integrated system bus.

Mobile system parts can be easily and economically designed for Profibus with help the of wireless systems. Maintenance-intensive drag chains or sliprings are replaced by wireless modules.
