Internships at Phoenix Contact

1. What types of internships do you offer?

Internships are offered for students studying information systems (including web design), electrical and mechanical engineering, marketing, communications, business administration, logistics and accounting. All of our internships are project-driven, which means you will be assigned a project that holds significance to our organization and have specific objectives and goals to accomplish related to that project.

Information Systems Internships: Students work with IT staff at various positions ranging from help desk support, hardware configurations, inventory management, application development and general IT duties. Students with web design experience are also needed for various projects.

Engineering Internships: Students will work within our engineering department on projects dealing with the design and development of new projects. Some students will also work in our marketing department on teams performing competitive analysis on various products, creating technical documentation for product use, and developing training materials for outside sales and distributors.

Marketing Internships: Students will work on marketing teams performing marketing analysis, competitive analysis, and cost analysis within our industry. Students will be involved in developing various presentations and materials to be used by our sales team.

Communications Internships: Students will work with our communications team in the areas of web design, literature and public relations.

Business Administration and Accounting Internships: Students will work in various departments ranging from accounting, to purchasing, to human resources, depending on the interest of the student and particular courses of study.

2. When are your internships available?

Our internships run based on a typical school year. We offer Fall internships beginning in September; Spring internships beginning in January; and summer internships beginning in May. We usually begin the interviewing process two months prior to the beginning of the upcoming semester. Some exceptions are made for schools that do not operate on a typical schedule (i.e. technical schools).

3. How do I apply for an internship?

Students who apply for internships at Phoenix Contact should be seeking an internship for college credit. Cover letters and resumes should be submitted to the Manager of Organizational Development at internships@phoenixcon.com or mailed to P.O. Box 4100, Harrisburg, PA 17111-0100.

4. After I apply, what's the next step?

Students who apply for internships will receive calls if there is a project that matches their interests and/or qualifications. All students must interview for internship positions. Interviews consist of meeting with the Manager of Organizational Development and the project manager for the internship. Students are encouraged to attend mock interviews at their school to be prepared for the interview. Most interviews last about one hour. If you are not contacted, please feel free to check in periodically with the Manager of Organizational Development so we know that you're still interested and available.

5. If I get selected for an internship, will I get training?

All of our interns are assigned a mentor. This person is not your supervisor. Our mentors receive training and information to help you be successful at your internship. Your mentor will orient you to the work environment at Phoenix Contact and provide you with the information and knowledge you need for your job requirements. If your mentor feels formalized training is required, then it will be provided.

6. If I get an internship and I like it, can I continue working at Phoenix Contact part-time after my internship?

Phoenix Contact's internship program was developed to help colleges offer a real-life learning atmosphere for students - a means to transfer book knowledge to the workplace. Therefore, our internships have a start and ending date.

7. Can I get hired full time by Phoenix Contact after my internship?

One of the goals of our internship program is to use it as a means of recruiting full-time employees. If you have a successful internship with us and there is a job opening for which you are qualified, we would encourage you to apply for the full-time position.
